The Gore Gore Rollergirls First Practice of 2011 and I’m a baby Gore!!!!!

As Emma Dilemma and I, headed to our first Gores practice Monday night, I felt a string of strong emotions. First, excitement that we were actually now Gore Gore Rollergirls but that was coupled with anxiety that we might not be able to execute basic skills in front of our new teammates. Then a touch of nausea set in as anxiety that we may be late to our first practice. I think Emma wondered if I was going to be ok as I let out a much needed scream (well it was more like a faint squeal) and then a few minutes later, I long hard sigh. I was simply trying to calm myself and hadn’t even realized that sounds were coming out.

My first experience with Roller Derby was not that long ago…

My nephew was visiting from Sudbury and I wanted to show him something a little different and exciting. We saw an advert in the Now magazine and so went to the Hangar to see The Smoke City Betties take on the Gore Gore Rollergirls in the 2009 Toronto Roller Derby Championship Game. Too late to buy advanced tickets, we arrived at the back of a long line outside the Hangar and nearly walked away thinking we would never get in. Then this volunteer, who I now know as Lucid Lou from the Death Track Dolls, put her hand on my head and said “The line stops here!!!!” It was by the skin of our teeth, but I was so relieved and excited that we made it in. It was standing room only but that didn’t matter. We were right in there trying to figure the game out and marveling at the kick ass vibe within. The Gores won and I was hooked! In fact, I went home that night, Googled the Gores, found a total ‘rock star’ group shot of them and made it my new profile pic. Although I did not know much about the game or any of them personally, I knew I wanted to be one of them! Two weeks later, I went to buy my fresh meat gear and emailed the fresh meat committee to sign up. I was going to do this despite the many naysayers who worried I could get seriously hurt. I remember one family member who said to me “That’s pretty intense, are you sure?” Yes I was……I became deeply involved with TORD by joining multiple committees and volunteering my time to help run events. Within a year I went through Fresh Meat training, passed the test, played my first game as a Deadly Viper Assassin Squad (TORD’s fierce farm team) and was drafted - NOW I am a baby Gore!!!!
As I got ready for my first practice with the Gores, I continued to feel my stomach turn! I was actually one of them as of this first practice! Practice was amazing! As we stretched, and talked about their past year and their goals for the coming year, I felt at ease and among friends. I was a Gore and I was gonna love every minute of it. EVERY MINUTE……even the minute when I fell on my face as Aston Martini tried to teach me how to turn around without taking my eyes of her……..even the minute when Brim Stone got us to stop and turn directions and I fell directly in front of Emma Dilemma, grabbed her by the chest and brought her down with me……even the minute when I was jamming and Dust Bunny hit me hard and I went flying off the track!

Take it on visits with infants
....and seniors AND...do outreach with those less fortunate. Like Chicks, for example. ;)

Gores and CN Power host WWF-Canada's resident Blogger at practice

CN Power climbed the CN Tower this week to raise money for WWF-Canada. In preparation for the occasion, CN Power and the Gore Gore Rollergirls decided to show WWF-Canada's resident Blogger Sara Falconer what we do when we're not climbing tall buildings! Above is a picture of Lunchbox and Lady Gag-ya, they're totally going to show Sara what it takes to play derby.

Sara practices her tough-guy face, it's not bad, it's better than Lunchbox's tough-guy face by far!

I have no freakin' clue what these two are trying to show Sara here.

An impromtu gun show, a very common event at roller derby related gatherings.

Take your boot to work day

We didn't want the boot to get lonely, so Brimstone and Junkie Jenny decided to take the boot to work with them.

Brimstone even let The Boot take a turn at answering some calls. The Boot did an OK job on the phone, but it's probably gonna go back to what it does best.... eating, drinking and hanging out with the Gores.

Hot tubs, Burritos and Babes!

So, last night we all hung out with our new boyfriend #1 - our 2009 championship trophy. We had a little party to welcome it back into the Gore home, and introduce it to it's new teammates ;)
Some of you might have heard that when we first got the boot, we accidentally left it behind on the floor of our changeroom; until Brim Stone did a final check of the change room and noticed it there...

To make it up to the Boot, we got it drunk, bought it a burrito and took it to the hot tub. I don't know about you but that night sounds AWESOME and it totally was!

It's Championship time Gore fans!!!

Ya see that glorious boot right up there?? Well us Gores can't wait to have it back where it belongs: right in our hot little bloody hands. We've been training hard all year to get this and have been undefeated this season! Now the time has finally come (dun dun dun!!!). On November 21st at 7pm, the bout to decide which team gets The Boot and some very well deserved bragging rights for a year will take place at The Hangar in Downsview Park. It's going to be one hell of a battle for the boot as we take on The Smoke City Betties in the most anticipated game of the season!

Don your leopard print, wave your Gore flag proud, get loud with your noisemakers and cheer us on as we bust out some new and deadly strategies we've been working hard on to unleash upon our favourite team in teal.

Tickets are $15 at the door, $12 advance (you'll probably wanna go advance because it will sell out quick), and kids under 9 are free. Beer, pizza and suicide seating (not for the weak of heart) are always available for your ingesting and watching pleasure!

So get yer ass down to the Hangar, get a sweet spot to watch the action and prepare for the best time your probably gunna have in a while... cuz this shit gunna be WILD!

The Gore-Gore Rollergirls have arrived!

We are so stoked to finally get this blog started! This blog will be THE PLACE to get all the most important info on Toronto Roller Derby League's infamous Gore-Gores. Anything and everything Gorie will be updated here so make sure to check back often because we have so many awesome things in the works coming very soon and even more ideas swirling around in our fucked up heads!
